Don’t go around it, go straight to the point. Don’t go around in circles, starting from and arriving at the same point: for once, go really far. Falling from North to South, cutting through the plain, going through the mountains, without beating the bush. You’ll light a sparkle in your eyes: on the verge of ridges, with your wheels deep into the gravel under the rain, with horizons so flat that they cut your sight, letting your bike go down along the hairpin turns, letting yourself go, up on the hairpin turns. With a little luck you’ll be able to listen to the signs: and for a while, you’ll feel at peace.
In the spring, the trip that really takes you elsewhere comes back: Witoor’s European randonnée, which puts Germany and Italy together, via Austria and Switzerland. No rings, but as always we have three straight brevets between Munich, Bozen and Ferrara. The ninth edition of the Rando Imperator is live on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May 2024, up and down the Alps: it’s to remind us that only by going very far we can feel close to what we are looking for.
